Know About Asbestos...

Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous silicate mineral. Most of it is either Chrysotile or white asbestos, Amosite or brown asbestos, and Crocidolite or blue asbestos. If you breathe the fibres in, some get lodged in your lungs and stay there. It may take years, but eventually they cause scarring and inflammation, which can ultimately lead to cancers like lung cancer and mesothelioma, plus non-malignant lung and pleural disorders like asbestosis and pleural plaques.

Asbestos Management & Handling...

Asbestos is found in a vast array of situations, from loose asbestos packing between floors and in partition walls to sprayed asbestos on structural beams and girders, pipework lagging, boilers, heat exchangers and more.

If the vessel is found positive with ACM in critical equipment & its only possible to remove asbestos while in dry-dock. Since the vessel may not be scheduled for immediate dry-docking, a Asbestos Management Plan(AMP) shall be prepared and submitted to Flag state for an exemption for a period of not more than 3 years.

If it's practical to isolate the equipment/machinery containing ACM, It's better suggested to remove the Asbestos As soon as it's detected. Submit the relevant records of the removal of Asbestos by professionals to the RO and update the IHM Part-1 accordingly.
